I am on a mission and dare you to care.

I suppose you think you don’t know anyone who is HIV Positive……..Surprise, Surprise, how wrong you can be?

This may well be the most important item you read today.

It may possibly be your neighbour, your best friend, an aunt, your brother, a cousin, a colleague, parent or even YOUR partner! Anyone could potentially be HIV+, yes, true story.

The fact of the matter is, you do know someone, and they may just not have disclosed their status as yet. Why? Because of the prejudice surrounding the virus and we all hate to be “judged”, don’t we?

You may be thinking; how does this affect me? Well, I personally put my fear in my pocket and made it my mission to make others aware of the pitfalls and the available support by sharing first-hand knowledge by undertaking to do talks and presentations around the country, adding value to individuals as well as group counselling, to those open enough to be concerned, gain knowledge and NOT judge.

Because of the nature of the virus, I have experienced the emotional and physical turmoil of my HIV positive status. I was never offered any support to speak of and had no idea where to go. I literally felt my life had fallen out from under me.

My mission is NOT to allow these regular people, just like you, to live with that outlook and fear. Without pointing fingers, which we know does not change anything; frequently find these human beings are unable to finance the cover of a consultation and receive the support they so badly require before going back into the world, misinformed or untutored, living positively or negatively without pre or post counselling.

It is still heard that the ‘black and gay populace have ‘AIDS’, how sad Mr & Mrs X. The HI virus is widespread throughout the human race, be it White, Black, Indian, Coloured or the rest of the human race.

No-one goes out purposely to get infected, trust me! Nor did I, it happens, be open, take heed; it could be someone close to you next time. If this message is not continued out there, with a 1000 new infections daily, it’s a possibility/probability that this trend will continue. Prevention and support can only be achieved with the participation of the community and nation at large.

By showing your support and empathy to the cause, you could assist in maintaining the many projects structured through the counselling centre, based in and around the country which remain vital to the wellbeing and survival of many people whether face to face, social media or through telephone access.

The counselling centre is based in Pinetown, KwaZulu Natal, started in January 2011 and has been sustained by my family and close friends, however, the time has now come for the lease to be renewed for a further 12 months and we wish to continue sharing the message. By requesting your assistance to what may not be your problem, but a cause that you too could support, we anticipate giving hope to many.

To make a difference in some small way, please find attached a Debit Order Form that can be returned to the below listed details or find the bank details for a once off donation.

Feel free to share this email, much appreciated. Having shared our message we thank you in advance for your support.

Yours sincerely,

Cindy

Positive Living – Skills Projects

On 14 March, 2013, in Skills Projects, by Cindy Pivacic

PROJECT 1:  Computer Skills Income Initiative

PROJECT 2: Training: Support Group Facilitator

                           ~Quality Living Course~

The objective in  founding AID My Journey is to play a major role in the transformation of how HIV and AIDS is managed, providing valuable structured programmes on  HIV and AIDS and programmes used to enhance employers and employees:

“Educate and empower people by providing local life skills programmes that promotes positive values, healthy habits, and education – resulting in real life power.”

Computer Skills Income Initiative: AID My Journey-Support requires computers and laptops to support this valuable initiative.

These will be put to good use in teaching individuals living with the HI virus that have either been retrenched due to ill health or left their livelihood once they became ill, some basic computer skills.

This initiative is to empower persons to prepare small business plans, quotes, letters and essential admin skills etc. in order to generate an income for themselves.

We plan to communicate these skills through various resources and then have the donated computers available to these persons to pursue their earnings from our premises.

AID My Journey-Support has been kindly offered the services of a local Durban College to teach individuals some of these skills.

Training: Support Group Facilitator – Quality Living Course is a valuable initiative that will encourage individuals to share this much needed information and in time assist in removing the stigma attached to the virus.

This initiative is to motivate and empower individuals to take this course information back to their communities and potentially generate an income for themselves by facilitating their own courses.

Should you wish to support this initiative in any way, we would be most grateful for your support.

There will be acknowledgment of the support via newspapers, website and other social media platforms acknowledging your role in the development of this project.

Many Thanks.

A Hale and Hearty Greeting,

How do you feel? Great!!!

I am quite sure you think you don’t know anyone who is HIV Positive…Wrong!

Continue reading if you have a concern for your fellow human.

Your neighbour, best friend, aunt, brother, cousin, colleague, parent and even YOUR partner may be HIV+, true story. The fact of the matter is you do know someone, they just may not have disclosed their status as yet because of the prejudice surrounding the virus.

You think it may not affect you but it does and it will. Isn’t it nice to know that someone out there living with the virus, that will be me, put their fear in their pocket and went public so that others may benefit with the knowledge and talks presented, sometimes for a fee but mostly not and that includes individual counselling and presentations to corporates who have access to do so.

I am not pointing fingers as most of these individuals do not have the funds to cover a consultation and I can’t allow them to go back into the world misinformed or uneducated either living positively or negatively without pre or post counselling.

‘Black and gay people have AIDS’ REALLY!!! I hear this still, how sad Mr & Mrs X. The HI virus is widespread throughout the human race. HIV does not discriminate. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor, Rich, Poor, middle-class, White, Black, Indian, coloured and the rest of humanity, the virus doesn’t care. I didn’t go out purposely to get infected, trust me! Nor did most people, it happens, Deal With It’.

Take heed, it could be someone close to you next if the message is not continued out there, with a 1000 new infections daily, it’s a possibility/probability. Prevention can only be achieved with the support of the community and nation at large.

Show some empathy and assist in maintaining the counselling centre as the projects that are in progress are paramount to the wellbeing and survival of many people.

The time has come for the lease to be renewed at the counselling centre and I am deliberating as to whether to sign for another 12 months or not.

The centre has been sustained purely out of my own pocket and that of my family and close friends….no more!

Harsh, yes, that’s me……I hope that you have got the message loud and clear as it is not something you want or wish on anyone.

Lastly, feel free to share what you comfortably are able to. Consider contributing to the organisation as it will be most appreciated by many.

By way of contributing, please find attached Debit Order Form (R50 – R100 or much much, more) 😉 and banking details should you wish to make an EFT contribution.

Many thanks, yours in sharing.

SHARE THIS MESSAGE – I DARE YOU TO CARE

TESTIMONIAL 1

Cindy, you and AID my Journey-Support are my lifeline to knowledge and a place I feel safe in and can discuss anything with regard to my status and meet people in the same position as I am. As a white male you are my only lifeline – or should I say the only lifeline I would consider associating myself…. I cannot imagine having to go to any of the govt run clinics for info. I called many national so called “help” lines before I found you – they were all useless – half the places no longer exist or you feel as if you are speaking to a text book – getting the standard replies to questions

Stigma associated with HIV/AIDS is causing so much more damage to those who are too afraid to disclose to their loved ones for fear of losing them.

I have SO many questions going around in my head all the time……

Diabetes is a life threatening disease but there is no stigma attached to this and no restrictions in any way but because it is not sexually transmitted its ok!

My HIV status changed because i saved someone’s life and even if I went to the man’s wife and doctor and got a letter to that effect it would not change the fact that, I

  • was      not raped
  • did      not get HIV from needlestick
  • did      not get HIV from blood transfusion
  • as      a result of a car accident

Even if it was from sex so what! ALL human beings have sex in some form or other – we are supposed to so why the stigma.

I have very close friends who do not know my status and a weekend does not go by where one of them passes a remark which refers to the blacks and HIV & AIDS and how they are “full of it” I cringe!

I’ve found that many people haven’t been fully introduced to the whole topic of HIV. In my case, like so many others, I wasn’t infected due to me having more than one partner. Neither does it make me a victim of a short life span. If anything, I’m now fully aware of what is healthy and what isn’t.

I’m as healthy as the next because I had guidance and knowledge given to me regarding my status.

I’ve been educated and kept up to date with recent statistics as to how not to infect people, how to look after myself and others close to me.

I always thought that being faced with HIV was an impossibility on my account. That I would never be introduced to the stress or health issues would never come across my path. Yet here I am, my CD4 count went up from 282 (Feb 2012, 4 months after I was diagnosed) to 714 (May 2012, after being introduced to meds, keeping an okay-ish healthy lifestyle from the knowledge I was provided with). This not being from the medication, but from the system of support I’ve been blessed with.

If anything, Cindy (to me personally) is a compass, she shows passion in what she does, provides a necessary service.  All in all, she’s my compass, my map, my guide.

TESTIMONIAL 4

Hi! Support group is helping m a lot coz it is the only place where I feel comfortable 2 share anything that worries me physically, emotionally and health. And we get different ideas 2 help us coping with positive life. When I’m @ the support group I feel special, warmth, love and care from the support group more than being @ home. Cindy is always there for help when I need someone to talk to and with the diet when I’m sick physically and emotionally.  Wish u well.

TESTIMONIAL 5

Hi Cindy, I never got to reply to your lovely comment about me the other day. Thanks so much. I love being in your support group. U are fun, very helpful, and wise with your advice. People are blessed to have you around ({}) to help them thru the HIV illness. Thank you.

Hi Cindy, since I have started with aid my journey support group I have more knowledge of HIV. If I have any questions Cindy is always there to advise me. I now know how to eat healthy and stay healthy. Cindy’s support group is helpful to all of us and fun at the same time.  I have been stigmatised in the past by my son and sister in law. My son won’t allow me to prepare food or cook for him. My sister in law would make me wash dishes with gloves on in case I cut myself. She even went as far as getting me my own zinc for me to wash my own dishes in. Sent from my BlackBerry®

TESTIMONIAL 6

Hi Cindy. Well for me what I’ve came across is that when I got infected with HIV it’s very hard to speak to people you know. I rather confide with a stranger than my own friends/family. It’s very difficult to go for an HIV test especially in the townships as its cold the ‘white room’ cause it’s sidelined in the corner of the clinic. Whether u going to walk out HIV pos or neg u already labelled positive cause you went inside the white room. I just feel like HIV shouldn’t be sidelined like a deadly illness as it’s manageable.
